Breaking a stud colt.. any advice?

I just bought a 2 year old tennessee walking horse stud colt.. i've been working with him by putting the saddle on him and putting the bridle in his mouth. He's doing well, he isn't jumpy at all. Would it be okay to take him out on a short trail ride? He is going to be used as my future show horse as well.. what type of horse shoe should i put on him? I want him to have a nice front end. Would it be a good idea to have him gelded now.. or wait until he is around 3 years old.. so he'll fill out more?
